Reading a Canvas & Stitch Reference
Resist the urge to pick up your needle right away. Study the canvas first, the way an artist studies a scene, before you decide how to stitch it.
Reading the Canvas — Before You Stitch
Step 1
Look at the Canvas as a Whole
- What catches my eye first? Where does my eye travel next?
- Is the design symmetrical or asymmetrical? Does anything feel too busy?
- Which areas are dominant? Which support the design?
Step 2
Find the Focal Point
- Every design has a star — a face, flower, monogram, bird, house, or sentiment. Circle it.
- Ask yourself: why did I choose this area?
Step 3
Divide the Canvas into Categories
- Foreground — closest to the viewer. Gets the most detail.
- Midground — supporting elements (furniture, trees, borders).
- Background — creates space without competing with the focal point.

- Hour 2 — Background & Midground Stitches: Scotch, Cashmere, Mosaic, Byzantine, Kalem — five geometric, even stitches that add texture without pulling focus.
- Hour 3 — Accent, Foreground & Texture Stitches: Nobuko, Corduroy, French Knots, Bullion Knots — more visual weight, for borders, structure, and focal detail.
- Hour 4 — Applied Practice: plan and stitch your own practice piece, matching each of the nine stitches to the zone it fits best, with compensation technique at zone boundaries.
Compensation Stitch Quick-Tips
- Geometric stitches (Scotch, Cashmere, Mosaic, Byzantine, Kalem) have a repeat unit that rarely divides evenly into a shape or edge — plan for partial units at boundaries.
- Adjust stitch size slightly at an edge rather than breaking the pattern's visual rhythm.
- On curves or diagonal design lines, work compensation stitches to follow the canvas edge, not the stitch's natural geometry.
- If a stitch needs heavy compensation everywhere, it may be the wrong choice for that shape — consider switching families instead of forcing it.
